The architectural project revolutionized the original plan to create a large living space. The old "kitchen-dining room and living room" configuration was overcome by unifying the environments in a bright living area, where the kitchen leaves the leading role to conviviality. By optimizing the corridor and bedroom inches, we inserted a central laundry room and created a second en-suite bathroom for exclusive use of the master bedroom. Every neutral chromatic choice was studied to integrate and enhance the preserved family furniture, such as the dining table, the chest of drawers, and the original chest.
Under the technical profile, the apartment was insulated at thermal and acoustic levels with an "internal insulation" in rock wool, applied to both walls and ceiling. This solution, combined with the new windows and the security door, drastically improved thermal and acoustic comfort. An interesting technical detail concerns the heating: since the building is connected to the city's district heating, the original radiators — sized for the previous volume — found themselves heating a volume reduced by the insulation, becoming extraordinarily performing and reducing energy consumption.
Here the warmth of the wood and the memory of the historical furniture coexist with the most modern insulation technologies.
The speed of execution was the trademark of this construction site started in June 2014: just two days after the move, the demolitions were already completed and, in about three months, the apartment was ready.
In terms of finishes, the client's design choice to opt for an oiled and untreated American Walnut parquet reflects the search for a natural warmth, pleasant to the touch as well as to the eye. The contrast between the dark wood, both of the flooring and of the maintained furniture, created an elegant and cared-for effect. Renovating the childhood home means transforming memories into foundations for the future. And so it was.
The untreated American walnut parquet gives a feeling of natural warmth that flows through the whole house, joining the rooms in a single material narrative.
